Just for fun, what does ChatGPT-4 think is the best sound machine for babies!? Harvey Karp, author of the best-selling book Happiest Baby on the Block, also strongly recommends a white noise machine to help your baby self-soothe. ![]() The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends using a quiet (less than 50 decibels) infant sleep machine to mask environmental noises, help babies fall asleep faster, and keep them stay asleep for longer.ĭr. If you buy products through links on our site, we may earn a commission. There are plenty of systems that have some aspects of these, but I have not seen both, at least not in a form accessible enough to be ubiquitous in 2023.Mommyhood101 independently tests and curates baby gear to help you make informed decisions. It needs good OS support, and there’s not really a developer oriented OS with smooth mechanisms for escalating and de-escalating privileges at a granular level (sudo ain’t it lol).Īn ideal development environment would: (1) allow for executing unsigned/self-signed code without jumping through hoops or relying on a 3rd party or App Store, (2) allow for escalation and automatic descalation of fine-grained privileges with native UX for grants (LittleSnitch on macOS has a good design for this specifically for networking IMO - one could imagine extending this to the file system). The barriers to this aren’t really technical IMO, mostly they are UX barriers. A really naive thing to do would be to run any shell (any program really) in its own isolated environment. I think there’s an interesting argument to be made about reducing the attack surface area for userspace though. That's something VS Code can do, so a policy that says you must use a browser-based version of VS Code might actually work for some organizations? The most straightforward path to that would probably be for the code editor to run in the browser. Perhaps someday we will work in containers and code editors will be locked down like browsers. Having a useful binary already there on the system might be useful for chaining with another exploit?īut that assumes a developer environment can be made into a low-privilege container, sort of like a browser's render process. The "airtight hatch" argument implies that second-level security is worthless because the first level is secure. I'm also reminded of how browsers do defense in depth. That part of the explanation could be fleshed out more? The question is what a vscode user could be tricked into doing. Phishing does involve an insider being confused and letting someone in, though. Here's the "airtight hatch" article folks are referring to: ![]() It's a nightmare for defense in depth and hunt teams. If you get a single detection at all for the initial compromise (not possible with 0day), the entire rest of the kill chain looks like legitimate access and vanishes. To the complete defense-in-depth stack, the entire c2 chain is cloaked in legitimacy. To a file scanner, it will look like an vendor-signed binary, the gold standard. To a network IDS, that access will look like an authorized cloud tunnel, completely normal. What we have here is a way for an attacker using shady means (email-delivered 0day, parking lot thumbdrive, browser drive-by compromise) to take over a computer and then drop a signed package that will allow for remote control over time that looks completely legitimate. The second job of a persistent attacker is to pivot that access from illegitimate to legitimate, so that by the time their TTPs become IOCs, log rotation has wiped that illegitimate access from the books and all their access looks legitimate. The first job of a persistent attacker is to gain acceess. You've misunderstood the situation completely. Rita moreno 1960s10/29/2023 Kugel : All in the Family is my favorite sitcom of all time. He’s a remarkable man, and a lovely, lovely person. He’s going to be 96, and he can speak and he can walk (laughs). Kugel: Let’s talk about the amazing Norman Lear and the One Day at a Time reboot on Netflix you’re starring in. It paid off in the sense that I had peace of mind and I didn’t feel like I was being insulted. I think it would have depressed the heck out of me to go back to that stuff. Moreno: I think it was a very good decision on my part, because the only thing that was being offered, really, were gang movies, and they certainly weren’t as interesting as West Side Story. Kugel: Yeah, and then there’s that! (Laughs) Any regrets about taking that stance? And in this business, it’s very hard to turn down work. Moreno: When I say, “I showed them,” of course, I’m being facetious. Your famous quote about this phase of your career was, “I showed them. I’ve experienced it as a journalist, not in terms of ethnic discrimination, but the bewilderment of hitting a peak and then stalling. Not only disappointed, but it really, really broke my heart. ![]() Rita Moreno: And I was very disappointed (laughs). I recently sat down with Rita Moreno to discuss her one-of-a-kind career and journey.Īllison Kugel: When you won your Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1962 for the film, West Side Story, you thought you would then transcend racial stereotypes with the parts you would be offered. Moreno will play a role in the film as well as Executive Produce. Recently, Moreno got the call from Steven Spielberg, for a forthcoming remake of the film that made her an icon, West Side Story. In 2014, Actor Morgan Freeman presented Moreno with the Screen Actor’s Guild Lifetime Achievement Award, calling her “a world class actress, singer and dancer,” and just as significantly, “a fighter, who battled to break free of racial and sexual barriers that plagued Hollywood’s golden age.” Before there was Rosie Perez, Salma Hayek or Jennifer Lopez, there was the inimitable Rita Moreno. The reboot centers around a Hispanic American family, no doubt Lear’s way of thumbing his nose at some of the more racist rhetoric flung through 2016’s presidential campaign. The show’s official premise is, “Two Cultures, One Familia.” It’s an updated twist on the 1975 hit series starring Bonnie Franklin, Mackenzie Phillips, Valerie Bertinelli and Pat Harrington, but with a twist. Moreno currently stars as Abuelita Lydia Riera, the hilarious and spicy grandmother on the new incarnation of Norman Lear’s television creation, One Day at a Time, now streaming its third season on Netflix. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, she played Sister Peter Marie Reimondo in HBO’s first original and groundbreaking dramatic series, OZ. ![]() Throughout the ensuing decades, Moreno continued to take on roles on her own terms, proving her staying power for six decades. She cemented an indelible legacy as one of the world’s most versatile and talented performers. Moreno was hard at work establishing herself as a bonified triple threat. Soon, two primetime Emmys followed in 19. Then came a Tony Award in 1975 for her work in the Broadway production of, The Ritz. ![]() Though film roles for a leading lady of color were far and few between at the time, Rita Moreno turned her attention to television and music, taking home a Grammy Award in 1973 for Best Children’s Album during her stint on the popular children’s television program and, The Electric Company. ![]() But even after taking home Hollywood’s top prize, Moreno’s career started and stalled repeatedly throughout the 1960s as she fought to be cast in roles that didn’t box her in to antiquated stereotypes. The role earned her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, crowning her the first Hispanic performer to ever win an Academy Award. Multi-award-winning actress, singer and dancer, Rita Moreno, blazed an iconic trail as the first mainstream Hispanic actress to grace Hollywood when she exploded onto the big screen as Anita in 1961’s classic film, West Side Story. Filezilla ftp server software10/29/2023 In order to do this, we clearly need to purchase a certificate (you can do that at GeoTrust, DigiCert, GlobalSign, Symantec, Thawte, etc.). However, Filezilla Server also supports Let’s Encrypt, i.e. This can be very useful if you host the FTP server in your network and do not want any large file transfers to saturate the entire internet band.įinally, there are also the FTP over TLS options, which are the security options to enable FTPS connections. In the options related to the administration panel, you can set some important configurations, including the connection port, a password, and a possible restriction only to certain IP addresses:Īnother interesting possibility is the bandwidth limitation (Speed Limits), ie the maximum speed allowed for upload and download. ![]() If you do not want to allow connections to your FTP server from the Internet, and therefore for use it in the local network only, you can ignore these passive mode settings. Let’s see the simple configuration in the following image: In most cases, a series of 50 ports should be sufficient. So the range of ports should not be too small or the transfers of multiple small files can fail. Due to the nature of TCP (the underlying transport protocol), a port can not be reused immediately after each connection. It is better to choose ports >= 50000 for FTP in passive mode. Valid ports can be between 5, but ports below 1024 are reserved for other protocols. Depending on the router model, you can forward a range of ports or you must forward all ports individually. If you have a NAT router, you need to forward these ports to the local machine where FileZilla Server is installed. ![]() These ports must then be opened on the firewall. If you do not want to allow incoming connections on all ports or if your FTP server is behind a NAT router (so to allow connections from outside your network), you need to tell FileZilla Server to use a specific range of ports for passive-mode connections. ![]() Let’s see this setting in the image below: If you want to use this FTP server to offer a public service, you may need to block some unwanted IP addresses, or to restrict the connection only to certain IP addresses. So let’s move on to the basic configuration of the FTP server, which will allow you to immediately perform an upload test of some files.Ĭlick on the button to open the general preferences, then set the FTP connection port. You can leave the password empty, because by default it is not set, and click on “Connect”. Since this is the local machine, you can leave “localhost” and specify the port (here you can see the default one, otherwise you have to specify the one you chose during installation). The FTP server service at this point will have already been started, so through this interface you can connect to it to configure the server parameters. Once the installation is complete, the management interface will be immediately opened, as you can see in the image below: Leave the option checked to start the management interface as soon as the installation is complete.Ĭlick now on the “Install” button to complete the installation. In the next screen, set up to start the FTP server management interface manually (otherwise it will start at each user logon). Leave the option checked to start the server after the installation completes. You can use any port number that is not already in use, for example 8387 (note: this is not the FTP port, but the port for FTP server administration). ![]() As for the port for the FTP server administration panel, you can use the default number or specify a different one for security reasons. This option is obviously necessary when you’re installing FileZilla on server systems. FileZilla server will be installed as a Windows service and will then start in the background each time the machine is started. We recommend leaving the default settings for starting the service. Proceed to the next step, where you can find the following important configuration: Select the components to be installed as shown in the image above. Pinball hall of fame las vegas michael10/29/2023 A captivating machine with gorgeous artwork and plenty of play field extras to keep a intermediate player like him entertained, whereas I always seem to be drawn to the more unusual pieces in places like this. There is just so much choice, machines are 50¢-£1 for 3-5 balls which is the best bang for your buck entertainment wise in the whole state of Nevada I am sure.Īndy’s favourite of the day on this trip was the highly collectable Bally Classic Theatre of Magic that was produced in 1995. At that point we both because mesmerised and wandered round the museum deciding what to go on. The sound of getting change in an arcade is an exciting one. So we rocked up to the change machine with our cup and both got $20 worth of quarters. The hundreds of machines range from the real classics from the heyday of pinball int he 1950’s right up to present day pins such as the new Stern X-Men Pinball Machine and AC/CD Pinball also by Stern. It is such a popular landmark in Las Vegas, Google have visited to film a 3D Tour of the premises that way you get so see all the cool pins and arcade machines on display right from the comfort of your own home. All excess revenues go to the Salvation Army and last year they managed to donate over $500,000 to this worthy cause. It is free to enter and completely family friendly fun, something that is hard to come by in the city of sin. The Pinball Hall of Fame is actually a not for profit museum set up by Tim Arnold who owns every single one of these fabulous machines. We we’re so impressed with what they had managed to do here, there we’re a lot more pinball machines that last time, including some vintage novelty machines which were wonderful to see in working condition, some of which are from the 1950’s. We walked in to a familiar sound of clunking and pinging, not to mention that familiar darkness that only someone who frequented arcades in the 1980’s would truly appreciate. Both myself and Andy we’re extremely excited again to be back and wondered what was in store for us on this visit. ![]() Having visited the pinball machine museum at their old and much smaller home, it was really exciting to roll up in the taxi and see how big the building was. ![]() I, for one, truly appreciate that you are there to enjoy.I recently had the pleasure of visiting Las Vegas and stop off at The Pinball Hall of Fame Museum in it’s new and much larger 10,000 square foot home at 1610 E Tropicana Avenue. Please come to experience and preserve the place, not destroy it. Kids running around, unsupervised, beating up the machines, and ruining the fun for others is not. Many of these machines are fragile, as well as a lot of the patrons. If you go there, please keep your children in check. I wish them all the best and hope it turns out to be a wonderful getaway for children of all ages, myself included. I understand the owners are building a new place across from Mandalay Bay. Look past the dinginess, and emerse yourself in the wonder of the place. The 'Old School' nature of the place just helps one to relive the experiences of their youth. True Pinball aficionados will hunt down machines anywhere they can find them, and most places one would visit were old and dirty as well back then. Yes the place is a bit old and dirty, but that is the way it was when I was a kid as well. I just lost my job of 9 years due to Covid-19, and have been down in the dumps lately, so I am going there today to try and cheer myself up a bit. I grew up with Pinball (I am 63 years old now) and the thrill of playing the game has never left me. Each and every time I go has been a wonderful experience for me. I have been to the Pinball Hall of Fame many times over the years that I have lived in Las Vegas. Not sure the younger generation would “get it”, but it doesn’t hurt to try to expose them to the unique experience of pinball. Most of the patrons appeared to be from a pinball generation, including us. Still really cheap compared to gambling, but to extend your time without re-opening your wallet, stick more to the 50 and 75 cent machines. Newer machines tend to have more ramps and lights, but also cost more to play. ![]() Older 25 cent machines are more difficult, slower flipper reaction, more wide open table to lose the ball straight down the shoot. Couple of games ate quarters quickly in true old fashioned pinball style, but we also found free plays on a couple machines, so it all evened out. ![]() Weekend was a little more crowded but not overcrowded and did not wreck the experience. Weekday we saw only couple other people so we could choose whatever we wanted. Went once on a weekday and once on a weekend. Easily accessible by car/Uber from the strip. Fun tactile way to kill a couple hours (if you like non-digital skill games). Classic pinball hall vibe mixed with a feeling of museum due to the span of years of games you can view or play. Dji fpv drone 2 release date10/28/2023 ![]() Unlike its other models on our best drones page, such as the DJI Mini 2, the DJI FPV isn’t intended as a camera drone. For instance, there’s no object tracking, nor are there modes for the drone to lock on to a particular subject and fly in a pattern around it. The DJI FPV has a 1/2.3-inch sensor, the same size as found in the majority of DJI’s Mavic drones, and can shoot 4K video at 50/60 fps, but lacks some of the video features found in those drones. ![]() While the DJI FPV shouldn’t be your first choice if you’re looking for a drone to shoot video - it only has a two-axis gimbal, and the drone’s rotors appear in the frame - it still delivers some impressive footage. However, when I flew the FPV drone in broad, sweeping curves high above the ground, that queasiness turned into elation as it felt like I was soaring like a bird. Because the FPV drone is so nimble, it’s easy to make fast, sharp movements in different directions, which, for those who have inner ear issues, will induce nausea within minutes. You couldn’t drag me onto a roller coaster). The view from the FPV drone’s camera to the goggles was so immersive that I nearly threw up. Normal mode is closest to other DJI Mavic drones, and lets you zip along at a max speed of about 31 miles per hour.Ī word of caution to anyone who gets motion sick (like me): If you make a lot of sudden movements, you’re going to feel a little nauseous. I’m here to tell you: this drone is FAST.ĭJI’s FPV drone has three flight modes: Normal, Sport, and Manual. I didn’t let the drone stray too far from me - its furthest distance was about a quarter-mile - but never experienced any lags, pauses, or dropouts in the video streaming to the goggles. In High-Quality Mode, the resolution stays the same, but the frame rate drops to 60fps, and the lag increases to 40ms. In low-latency mode, they can stream video at 810p/120fps with about a 28ms lag time. Small dials on the bottom of the goggles let you fine-tune their focus. The image produced by the FPV goggles was incredibly immersive, taking up nearly all my field of view. As a result, light seeped in, though it wasn’t overly distracting during flights. The goggles were comfortable to wear, though they didn’t form a great seal around the sides of my head. It would be smart if there were a holder on the goggles’ strap, though. ![]() Fortunately, the power cord is long enough so that you can stuff the battery in a jacket pocket. While it shaves some weight off the goggles, this approach makes things a little awkward. The FPV goggles don’t have their own internal battery, so to use them, you have to connect a small battery via a proprietary USB-C adapter. On the other side of the goggles are two other buttons, a microSD card slot, and a USB-C port. As with the controller, it took a bit of practice to remember where the buttons were and what they did, but I got the hang of things after a few flights. On the upper right side is a Record button, a Back button, and a small directional stick. The gray and black goggles are very angular, and have four screw-in antennas, one on each corner. When you put them on, the FPV goggles make you look like a cross between Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs and the dude from Hellraiser. It is important to note that no investment can guarantee a specific rate of return, as various market factors can negatively impact the rate of return, leading to the potential erosion of the present value. The present value calculation has a limitation in assuming a consistent rate of return throughout the entire time period. The concept of present value is primarily based on the time value of money, which states that a dollar today is worth more than a dollar in the future. Step 3: Next, determine the number of years until the future cash flow starts, denoted by t. The rate, denoted by r, is what discounts the future cash flows. Step 2: Decide the discounting rate based on the current market return. Step 1: Firstly, figure out the future cash flow which CF denotes. The formula for the present value can be derived by using the following steps: Therefore, John’sresent-day value of John’s lottery winning is $3,629.90. Calculate the present value of all the future cash flows starting from the end of the current year. Let us take another example of John, who won a lottery, and as per its terms, he is eligible for a yearly cash pay-out of $1,000 for the next 4 years. Therefore, David needs to deposit $2,462 today in order to be able to withdraw $3,000 after 4 years. Calculate the amount that David is required to deposit today.Ĭalculate the present value using the following formula: The applicable discount rate is 5%, to be compounded half-yearly. Let us take the example of David, who seeks a certain amount of money today such that after 4 years, he can withdraw $3,000. Therefore, the $2,000 cash flow received after 3 years is worth $1,777.99 today. We calculate the present value using the following formula: Calculate the value of the future cash flow today. ![]() According to the current market trend, the applicable discount rate is 4%. Let us take a simple example of a $2,000 future cash flow to be received after 3 years. Let’s take an example to understand the Present Value’s calculation better.
